All.Art.History

In light of current political issues, Roshy Afshar (2nd year HoA) has created the Instagram page @all.art.history to inform a wider audience about art history.

"In today's society, we need to change the narrative around art to make it more inclusive, and representative of everyone."

HoA Recommends...

We've started an Insta series of posts on art related films, podcasts and books to keep us entertained at a sociable distance this term. Stay tuned for our recommendations on art and Venice related things to enjoy from home!

Our first suggestion: At Eternity's Gate -a biographical film on the one and only Vincent van Gogh. William Dafoe stars as the 'famed but tormented artist spending his final days in Arles, France painting masterworks of the natural world that surrounds him.'

FAQs

message our social media with more questions!

What are you planning to do this term due to Covid 19. Will there be regular meetings for academic and social events?

There are many exciting cross-society collaborations with artists and top academics! We will have an exciting and engaging range of events this term where you will meet many other students as well as the Exec members both in-person and online!

I was wondering if you were planning talks / lectures / trips this year, and if so, are most of them likely to be online/virtual?

For now, our guest speaker events will most likely be online. Over Summer we had a virtual film screening & talk event with artist and film maker Oraib Toukan. Members were able to participate and ask live questions from their homes, and we found this a safe and very successful compromise -and it was free! However we hope to invite speakers to campus in future, like we were able to last year.
We are planning trips and in person socials. Collaborations with other societies such as PhotoSoc and Line (a fashion soc), to name a few, are underway. We'll be releasing details on our social media once plans are more concrete.
Our first in person event is Wednesday 14th October in Leamington Spa. We've booked the garden of Bedford Street jazz bar from 2pm. More details on our events page and FB!

I'm really interested in History of Art but I'm a law student, can I still join, will there be something for me to do?

We'd love for you to join! Our society events include gallery trips and guest speakers, as well as social events that don't require any prior Art History knowledge -just an interest in the subject! If any of our events encourage some Art History discussion, we would let our members know in advance and provide adequate resources to learn more. There will be plenty to do and get involved with, because although we are an academic society, we are inclusive and keen to grow!

Besides events, our members also have the opportunity to write for our website. We're looking for articles and exhibition reviews, however poetry and practical art submissions are also very much encouraged. Art History students study how to write about art throughout their course, though if there was enough interest shown, perhaps tutorials and workshops could be organised on how to write and engage with artwork -let us know in the feedback form at the bottom of the page!

Is there any social or taster I could attend to get to know a little better what you do?

Our first social is coming up on Wednesday the 14th October in Leamington Spa, we'd love to see you there! It's a meet and greet in the garden of Bedford Street bar. Feel free to bring some friends and flatmates too, just make sure you click going on the Facebook event so we know numbers. Future events will be more Art History based.

The best way to stay updated is by following our Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and signing up to our newsletter, you can do this with the form on our website. Also, check out our Events website page for a feel of what we got up to last year!

I'm not an Art History student, but I've recently gained an interest in learning about art history, am I still eligible to join your society? The events look fab!

Absolutely! We are very keen on attracting non-Art History students. Our events are very wide ranging, and one does not need prior academic study of History of Art in order to join. You are most welcome to join - we would love to have you on-board! Our society fee is only £2 and can be purchased off the SU website.

Also - please do check-out and subscribe to our society newsletter. It has lots of new and interesting content and articles written by Society members and the Exec.

Let us know if you would like to have any more information or details about anything. We are more than happy to provide art historical resources and recommendations to you if you would like!

Here are some links to good art historical resources and websites. Art Attache (a platform founded by our alumnus Ravi Shah), Mouthing off (and online magazine founded by multiple alumni) and our Department page!

What's meant by the Foreign Tour? I've seen that event on other society pages but I don't know what it involves.

Foreign tour is a society trip to another country, whilst the Domestic Tour is a trip within the UK. Our HoA tours would involve exploring a city over a number of days, with a range of social games and art related activities such as gallery visits.

What is the usual format of the events in your society? Do attendees need to come prepared on a certain topic of discussion? Also, do you teach how to "read paintings"?

Our society is only a year old - so we haven't got a set standard, but we have artist talks, panels, museum visits and social events planned so far. The academic events should be accessible to all levels, so preparation is optional, but if and when it would be necessary, we will keep you updated ahead of time.

In regards to "how to read a painting" - we are an academic society connected to the History of Art department, we have modules on methods of Art History in third year but it is a skill that is taught throughout our course. Many of our activities and events will compliment your art historical studies and employ new skills that you will learn to develop. If you are a student from another department with an interest in Art History, we are excited to see you're interested in the subject, and perhaps if there is a large enough demand for such a tutorial, it could be something we can organise.

Any resources for upcoming academic events would be provided to members beforehand. We are looking forward to hosting events of this sort!
